- the only place that the hardware abstraction HAS to take place is
- when you install an operating system on the machine (or when you
- change hardware in the box). Your operating system can install only
- the drivers needed for your particular hardware, and can patch the
- drivers to point directly to the chips. Once the OS is installed,
- there isn't really any difference between running PnP and using
- "dumb-cards".

- the only real problem from an OS standpoint is - since YOU are not
- making the hardware, you can't just assume that the serial-port is
- going to be in the same location on every piece of hardware. (but
- when you install your OS on the hardware, it can lookup where the
- serial port is, and plug in the location to your drivers.)
